Mike Just watch the spectral sensitivity of your detector. At some occasions I can't see the sun setting, but through the digital camera, which is more sensitive in the IR, it is still visible. And yet an other aspect. Not only clouds may hide the sun. Haze and or smog my cause so high extinction at the dip that the sun - even in a totally clear sky - is there not any more visible. It really all depends on what you aim at.
