    Thanks for the inputs.  Most of the 19th c nav scribbles I see are not in a log book but are on scraps of paper.  The resulting position might be recorded in the log but the calculations are not.

    Your comments are interesting for another reason - how conservative navigators/ship captains were. Once you have something that works, you don't give the practice up easly.
