France is only at 20 km away from my home, and I love France. The feeling of being in another country, with other language near my home is amazing. The coast of the French Basque Country has very good places for sailing, ride in bike, taste oysters and drink fine white regional wines, (only the coffee is awful), and to enjoy with the sextant.

In such circumstances, years ago, in order to check my sextant and my skill, I done an experiment consisting in precalculate the instrumental altitude that the Sun should have taken at my known position, for several hours. For compare this with the measured ones I set the theoretical altitude Hs in the sextant and wait for the sun touched the horizon. Good conditions at shoreline, clear horizon. I remember that the maximum error was 5 s, and the mean error was 3 s. 30 sights in two hours. unfortunately I can not find the results to illustrate what I say.

Thanks Douglas for the paper, (not included in the IoN Celestial Navigation CD)
