In such circumstances, years ago, in order to check my
sextant and my skill, I done an experiment consisting in precalculate the instrumental
altitude that the Sun should have taken at my known position, for several hours.
For compare this with the measured ones I set the theoretical altitude Hs in
the sextant and wait for the sun touched the horizon. Good conditions at
shoreline, clear horizon. I remember that the maximum error was 5 s, and the
mean error was 3 s. 30 sights in two hours. unfortunately I can not find the
results to illustrate what I say.
Thanks
