For Windows user: A very practical tool for resizing pictures is the
Image Resizer. This is one of the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
which allows to resize one or many images files with just a simple
right-click. The install file can be downloaded here:

An other tool which may be useful in this context (and in many others)
is the on-line media converter which allows the conversion of "any"
file-format into "any" other:
