Micrometer drum sextants can have gear lash, or lost motion in the gears.
Just as you should always move your index arm in one direction when taking an observation, the measurement of index error should be taken while moving in the SAME direction.  Eliminate lost gear motion by loading your gears always in the same direction.
This advice does not apply for vernier sextants.  There is no gear and therefore, no lash.
