Thanks Marc for all the leads. Specifically now I am after pre-war, 1920s - 1930s civilian texts. I have a copy of Weems Air Navigation British Empire Edition, Second Edition 1942 edited by A.J. Hughes and P.F. Everitt, respectivey the manufacturer and the chief optical designr of the RAF Mk IX bubble sextant. I wondered yesterday if the American version of Weems was very different so as to justify getting a separate copy. Has anyone compared the two? Wartime American navigation texts are not common here in the UK but the standard RAF text - Air Ministry Manual of Air Navigation Vol. 1 AP1234 is very common and can be had from eBay or second hand book shops for under $10. It is a very comprehensive text written, so I discovered, by Dickie Richardson, a fairly famous RAF navigator, although his name does not appear on the book. The 1941 version, although missing some updates put in in 1944, is more interesting as its examples relate to WWII operational flying over Europe. The 1944 edition was sold to the public and the examples were changed to navigation practice over Wales in the UK. A highly recommended book. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marc BernsteinTo: Sent: 27 March 2005 04:07 Subject: Re: Astro Navigation on Pan American Flying Clippers > Another worthy book is Air Navigation by Weems.
