Now found the following reference in 'History of Air Navigation' by Arthur J, Hughes (the comments ae mine): "This principle (magnetic compass checking) was not employed in the air until the introduction of the astro compass in 1942, when a simple form of sun compass (he probably means simpler than the clock driven Bumstead sun compass to which he referes later) was designed by Mr. P.F. Everitt." P.F. Everitt worked for Hughes and Son in London as chief optical dsigner and was also the designer of the RAF Mk IX bubble sextant. ----- Original Message ----- From: Zvi DoronTo: Sent: 05 April 2005 22:28 Subject: Astro Compass History > Wondred if anyone knows who designed the Mk II Astro Compass or at least on > which side of the pond it originated, and approximately when.
