That was a great reference, and I 'm sorry I didn't see it first. However, the major use that I recall for the Astro Compass was by aircraft flying near the earth's poles where you can not get a reliable magnetic reading from a standard compass. When used for that purpose since it was North that you were trying to determine, the portion of the instructions that were most helpful were in the section that had to do with proving the set-up.
