    Astra IIIb Quality
    From: Dan Allen

So now that many of us (myself included) have endorsed the Chinese made
Astra IIIb, I have one question: how come it is so well made when so many
other things from China are pure junk? This actually was the largest
    obstacle to my purchasing it.

Look at your kid's toys that brake before you get them home from Toys R Us
and they are all made in China. Look at the crummy boom boxes that Sony
makes now: made in China. I know that we used to say that stuff made in
Japan (1950s and early 1960s) was junk and then Japan of course became
makers of quality products. Then things moved to Taiwan and their early
years were pretty bad, but now Taiwan makes some excellent, high quality
items from large yachts to small precision machined metal parts.

Then things moved to Malaysia and they are pretty decent now, but China,
although I am sure it will get better, China still makes some pretty crummy
stuff. Part of the problem of course is that we Americans buy the junky
stuff and so they just keep making the crummy stuff with no need to change
their low quality bar. (That's why I don't buy toys made in China any more,
until they get better made. I know: this leaves me with few options. Oh
    well.)

So then, in the middle of all this junk we get the exceptionally well made
Astra IIIb. Perhaps the Celestaire folks reading this can enlighten us
about the Astra. Did Celestaire commision the making of the Astra? How did
this well-made sextant come to be?

    Dan
