In my opinion there have been some complicated suggestions when in fact the solution is very simple and cheap - cooking oil. Fogging is not a problem and the oil is viscous enough for wind ripple to not be an issue. Compared with engine oil clean up is not a problem because dish washing liquid can be used. I have used whatever oil happens to be in the the kitchen cupboard at the time.
