    I'm with Greg and think Stephen is in error. It is not a circular sextant with readings taken from opposite diameters to eliminate centring error. Note that there are two "index mirrors", one above the other and one tall "horizon mirror". The idea was to take simulataneous readings of the angles between three shore objects.
