Announcement: Captain James Cook Memorial Navigational Event
    From: Anthony Fountain
    Date: 1998 Oct 27, 3:15 AM

    G'day all,

I am writing to advise you that on the weekend of the 22nd/23rd May 1999,
the Laguna Quays Yacht Club (Whitsunday Islands, Queensland Australia)
will be conducting the inaugural Captain James Cook Memorial Navigational
    Event.

The area was named by Captain Cook when he sailed down, and named, the
Whitsunday Passage on Whit Sunday, the 23rd May 1770 when on his voyage
of discovery of eastern Australia.Consequently, the event is scheduled
for the Whit Sunday weekend of every year and it is an event that has as
its area of concentration, that of the art of navigation.

A number of us have a growing concern at the rise of GPS navigation at
the expense of traditional navigation and already this year, we have had
two sinkings and a number of groundings in the area whose base source of
error was an overconfident reliance on GPS.

It also concerns us that as great as GPS is (I doubt if anyone will
disagree with its phenominal powers), it is nonetheless controlled by the
US Department of Defence and I am sure that if a military threat is
percieved against the USA, that GPS will be either disabled fully or
manipulated in some way to make accurate navigation by all but those "in
the know" very difficult. That is a scenario that must shake every mariner
    and aviator to the core.

As more details become available, they will be released to the Navigation
Group. If you desire details on our magnificent cruising grounds here in
the Whitsundays, you can read my Logins on my website
     under The Tringriz Voyage.

Likewise, if you wish to contact the Laguna Quays Yacht Club and/or the
Laguna Quays Marina, email them at .

    Avagoodday,

    Tony Fountain
