    Thanks for your very interesting reply. Herodotus clearly states that the reef was in the strait itself between Sciathus and Magnesia, so your suggestion that he mixed up the name with an island off the eastern shore of Sciathus is a good one. By no means would this be the only geography that our author got wrong.

    I don't have a chart or large scale modern map of the area and am unable to identify the "Ant island" (Μυρμήγκια) you referred to. Are you able to give me its position lat and long?
