    Re: Anacapa Island Sun Line

I just finished John Shaw's Landscape Photography which helped with the seascape capture. A vintage 28mm wide angle Pentax Super Takumar (1968?) was used on a 10MP Canon Rebel DSLR body.

My height of eye from the boat cockpit was 6 ft. The distance to the natural horizon is approximately the square root of 6ft = 2.4 nautical miles. Anacapa Is. was well beyond 2.4 NM.

For this exercise I have used an assumed position from a prominent spot at Anacapa Island. There should be no doubt about the position of the photographer.

P.S. note that Anacapa light house is in range with the north shore of Anacapa's west end in the seascape image.

    These are great photos Greg.

When the horizon has land in the distance, as in your first photo, how can we be absolutely sure that we are sighting the true horizon and not just the beach?   I imagine this could be relevant at dusk, dawn and in low visibility conditions.

    David Smith.
