believe me, water is NOT good in winter, if liquid it gets a "haze" swirling across it and if frozen there are ridges, cracks... distorting the surface, i have used coffee few times it sort of works if the surface is slightly above the edge of the cup and there is no wind, good enough for finding pos to nearest 2-3NM or so, far better is light oil or even better a levelled mirror or mercury.
