    Except that the "extensive search" was on the ocean and many planes have disappeared over the ocean without a trace. See attached partial listing.

    You raise a good point, but the extensive search that was launched
    immediately after the disappearance failed to turn up anything - so the
    obvious conclusion is that the plane went down elsewhere (possibly far from
    the radius of the original search).

    And maybe it wasn't an "error in navigation" - I wonder if it's possible
    that they realized that they weren't going to make their original
    destination (Howland  Island), and changed course hoping to re-fuel
    elsewhere but ran out of fuel before reaching the new destination?
