Many email programs have a feature to block messages which exceed a size
threshold. For example, I have Thunderbird configured for 5 k max.
Anything bigger, only the first few lines are displayed, and I have to
click an approval button to download the rest.

Based on your header, it appears you are using Outlook Express. Try
this. Click Tools, Message Rules, Mail. Select the Mail Rules tab. From
there it should be pretty clear how to proceed. If the default max size
isn't right, you can click on it to alter the value. Be sure to select
the Stop Processing More Rules box. If you overlook that (and it's
easy), the message is subject to further processing by any subsequent
rules in the list. That can cause unexpected things to happen.

You can also set up a rule to block emails with attachments.

It's important to use your ISP's web mail interface or some other means
from time to time to verify your mail client is cleaning up the server.
If you set things up wrong, the mail you reject remains on the server.
It may take some experimentation to get it right. Ideally, you probably
would want to avoid killing the filtered-out mail on sight, so you
retain the option to download it anyway.
