Mary Croarken has published three articles about computing the Nautical Almanac in the 18th century: Mary Edwards: Computing for a Living in 18th-Century England, in: IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, Vol.25 (2003),no.4, 9-15. Providing Longitude for all. The eighteenth century computers of the Nautical Almanac, in: Journal for Maritime Research, September 2002. Tabulating the Heavens: Computing the Nautical Almanac in the 18th-Century England, in: IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, Vol. 25 (2003), no. 3, 48 - 61. I haven't read them, but they might contain more information about Almanac errors and their causes.
