Hexane and Naptha have also been suggested by list members. These two flammable liquids are harder to find than Xylene and more expensive.

Home Depot (U.S. hardware store chain) has Xylene. I may try this. The bubble chamber on the old A-7 (pre-war) hasn't aged well so small bubbles do noticeably drag across the chamber surface.
