Alex, when I fly I often fly with only two small duffles or backpacks, each small enough to stow overhead or under a seat. That way, I don't worry about the airlines losing my bags. Last time I flew cross-country to sail, you can be damned sure anything I *needed* to have with me was in my carry-on bag. And that included personal sailing gear. The airline industry in the US, frankly, are lying sacks of ____ when it comes to telling the truth about baggage. A couple of years ago I was taking a flight with a layover of 6 hours between flights. I was going out of the airport into the city on some business in between, breaking my flight. So I asked if my duffle could be checked straight through to the destination so I wouldn't have to store it or worry about it making the flights, and they SWORE it could ONLY fly in the same plane as me, not to worry, they'd make sure it flew with me on both flights. OK, fine. I get to the final destination...all the bags come off the carousel, mine isn't there. Where is it? Sitting in the open next ot the baggage check, unsercured, unsupervised, where it had apparently been FOR SIX HOURS since it went through direct on the first flight--WITHOUT ME. This is most definitely NOT unusual. While some airlines are better than others...they're all in the "aviation BUSINESS" as a way of making money, not like old fashioned AIRLINES that were out to ensure happy passengers and safe flights. They said the "business" lost 60% of air travel after 9/11. I wonder what they'll see after the next round. Which I fully expect, because there still is no security--only the dog and pony show, meant to inconvenience you just enough to make you feel safe. Sorry if that's a bit OT.
