My DR track is to point A in the Pacific . Just before reaching A , I precompute time & coordinates of sunset for a point A-1 . Due to adverse weather I go to A by detour via B . From B to A-1 is 200 nm which I can make good to actually see sunset , approximately . After time-speed-distance DR and laying out sunlines to check , I see the sun downing , the time point matches reasonably . If I now communicate that I am over my Fix A-1 , it is to be considered that the accuracy is better than by direct observation , by unarmed eye or any sextant type since , a.o. my flight altitude is of inexact record and actual refraction etc. is unknown . So the method is : do not for a fix observe sunrise/sunset , but go to the precomputed place by DR , check superficially for the sun , and you are over your fix , reasonably. Has anyone (air , sea , yachting) experience with this method ?
