    All,

I'm considering buying a box/pocket sextant on eBay. There is what appears to be a very nice example currently listed. (Item # 121930671000)

Not having a telescope is not a particular handicap. I have one without a telescope and can usually get within 1 MOA. I find it surprisingly accurate. Very nice to do lunars with too, and very accurate in this application due to the fact is it so light.

However, it should be remembered that these box sextants were originally made as surveying instruments and as such, did not need the filters for the index mirror that you would expect with a marine sextant. Many box sextants DO have filters, but this example does not seem to and would appear to be a strict surveying instrument.
