That's may be true in many cases but not in all cases. On a ship traveling at twelve knots, if it takes just four minutes between the first and last sight then the first LOP needs to be advanced two NM, not a trivial amount and a number that exceeds the likely errors in the sights.
I should also point out that the mathematical method of advancing an LOP is not limited to just the short period of time needed for a round of sights but is also a very accurate way to advance an LOP for the usual running fix. It produces the same advanced LOP as the more common plotting method.
