Thank you all for this discussion on advancing the LOP. It has been enormously helpful.
John, I didn't understand what you were saying about the uselessness of advancing an LOP to the DR at the time of a new LOP. In your graphic illustration, it looked to me like this was precisely what you had done, even if your mental pathway to this outcome was unlike my own.
However, I have your book on Celestial Navigation at home and will peruse the section you reference tonight, as well as the Ocean Navigator article (which, happily enough, is available in their archives).
I don't want to close off any further discussion on this from you who are debating aspects of this issue. As you might expect, I am following the thread with interest. But I definitely wanted to express my gratitude to you all who have helped me.
