Admin: record first quarter and some useful tricks

The NavList message boards have had a record first quarter, and we haven't even reached the end of it. We've had 1500 messages in the first three months of 2013. Back in 2010, the previous record was just under 1300 messages. That's equivalent to a 5% annual increase. Now that's nothing for the Internet, but for an obscure and relatively archaic topic like traditional position-finding and celestial navigation, that ain't bad!

I am getting ready to turn off mail delivery for a large number of people who are receiving NavList messages in daily digests. Those of you who replied to my several emails asking for confirmation, don't worry, I've got you on the "keep" list. If anyone who for some reason did not confirm directly reads this message and gets their daily digest turned off, it's no problem to turn delivery back on at any time. And no "slight" is intended, but email delivery adds to overhead and causes a variety of problems. I am certain that most of the addresses that are being turned off are, in fact, abandoned email addresses: bitbins in the sky.

And just a reminder for everyone, you can CHOOSE to receive individual NavList messages by email and/or daily digests of NavList messages, and both the individual messages and the digests can be delivered in either "plain" text or "fully formatted" html versions. Individual email versions of message go out a few minutes after they appear on the message boards. You can also sign up for a daily summary digest which provides a quick list of all messages. This can be handy if you find that you sometimes miss individual messages. And if you're a real NavList junkie, you may want to sign up an SMS or "text message" email address. This will send you a brief notice and a direct link for every message shortly after it appears on the message boards. If you send this to your smartphone, you're two clicks away from any message. Note that you will need to figure out the "email" equivalent address for text messaging on your phone if you want this. It varies from carrier to carrier. All these options can be set via the "member settings" link which you'll find on the main NavList message boards at fer3.com/arc. You can also email me and I can easily make changes for you manually.

Please note: I am in the process of re-building indexes for the archives over the next week, so if something doesn't work in the older messages archive, please email me, or try again in a couple of days.
