Excellent time logging suggestions Gary.
I have used the voice recorder app on my Palm Centro smart phone with success as you have described. The smart phone charges with a 12volt cigarette plug and accepts head phones for play back. Play back works very well using a stylist.
There is another time stamping method for those with a point and shoot digital camera. First set the camera time to UT time then take a picture of the chronometer to verify the time. Now snap off a picture to get a time mark of an observation followed by a picture of the sextant arc degrees and micrometer drum. The time stamp needs to display hours minutes and seconds. Close the eyes when using the flash at twilight to prevent night blindness.
I still prefer using the digital watch time minus a second which is committed to memory until written down on an index card. For precision work I like the stop watch. Old habits are hard to break.
