    I'm not convinced that this has anything to do with the terminology. The 
    difficulties you describe are the difficulties of explaining the intercept 
    method itself, first of all, and then the quirks of those tabular methods 
    which require specific and rather peculiar choices for the AP. These are 
    definitely confusing things! No doubt about that. If you referred to the AP 
    as the RP or reference point or some such, it is still what it is.
