A few administrative notes...
There was a NavList outage for about eight hours this morning. This looked much scarier than it was. It was a minor screw-up at the domain registrar, easily fixed. If it had not coincided with my daily hibernation, it wouldn't have even lasted an hour. :)
Just a reminder on attachments. Attachments are fine, but cannot exceed about 2.25 megabytes total in any single message (the limit is really three megs, but because of the encoding used in email for binary files the limit before attachment is lower). When you have a graphic file that you want to attach, please make some reasonable effort to reduce the size to a reasonable screen-viewing limit and also reduce the color depth if you can. If it's a photo, save it as a JPG. If it's a drawing or similar line-based graphic, save it as a GIF or PNG. Avoid BMP files, and also please do not "wrap" images in PDF files unless you really need to do so for content reasons. A PDF file containing nothing but a single image or photo doubles the size of the attachment for no reason.
Please avoid using "at" signs in NavList messages. These are masked to avoid publishing members' email addresses in the web-harvestable message boards. If you want to publish your email address so that it's visible on the message boards, use a format like this: FrankReed[-at-]HistoricalAtlas.com. Please avoid using "at" signs elsewhere in messages.
In subject lines, if you are replying to a message and you see extra "Re:" prefixes like "Re: RE: old sextant", or mixed language Re's piling up like "Re: AW: Re: AW: Re: AW: old sextant", please just delete the extras before you send your message. That is, just EDIT the subject and delete any extra Re's or other language equivalents. Software at various points attempts to find these things and clean them up before the messages go out, but sometimes a stray character or a non-English language email program can leave these little traces. Not a big deal, in any case.
