ADMIN: The temptation of the NavList message archives

From a recent post (author irrelevant since it is an increasingly common attitude here):
"Ack!  Of course I forgot to check the archives before posting!  Sorry about that."

Never say that again. Never think that again. And don't ever apologize for not checking the archives again!

One of the diseases of online interactive communities like NavList can be summarized with the comment "it's in the archives". This is a deadly malady that sucks the breath out of actual conversation and fresh thinking. The archives are loaded with good information as well as wrong and misleading information. Sure, point to an old post for background, even directly quote from an old post, but don't treat the archives as the final word or a work of reference. It's just conversation. Rather than pointing to the archives, consider writing something fresh. Have a new thought! Spin a creative take on an old subject. What elese are we here for??

    :)

PS: For some of you, I realize that with changing interests and advancing years, it can be difficult to devote time to composing a new post, but that is what you should apologize for! And if that's the case, then try to do better by copying and pasting some relevant bits from an old post so that there is at least the opportunity to start a creative conversation, to inspire fresh thinking.
