Before they reach for their metaphorical vials of vitriol, I should like to ask members to bear in mind the effect their ad hominem words might have on would-be contributors. Not everyone is as robustly rude as some and not everyone reacts to rudeness to or about them by returning it in kind. Some may think twice about contributing and simply walk away, preferring to save their energies.

I understand Frank Reed bears the cost of administering NavList. While learned papers (and, for all I know, PhD theses) have been written dissecting the meaning of "He who pays the piper calls the tune," I think we all know what it means in this context.

I suggest that those who want to make remarks reflecting on the person rather than the subject of discussion, or to have a puerile spat, use the "Reply-to-Author" button, so that those of us with tender academic souls don't have to read them.
