An alternative to Xylene is isopropanol. I use it in my A-12 and it seems to work just fine. It has the advantage that it doesn’t stink quite like Xylene (which is sold as paint thinner), and I can get reagent grade alcohol where I work (we use it for cleaning stuff). The only disadvantage I can see, is it can mix with water, which is something you absolutely do NOT want in your bubble (It can lead to rusting the metal parts). Xylene, on the other hand is hydrophobic, so you don’t have to worry about that.

What concentration of xylene should be used for the bubble refill?
