I had to box the compass when I was a cadet. We didn't have to use
the quarter points, so I never had the trouble with incomparable
systems.
It is becoming a rather moot point these days in the US merchant
marine with everything divided into degrees instead of compass points. My
gyro repeaters only have cardinal and intercardinal points in addition to
the degrees. My magnetic compass card has the full compass rose, but we
still only use degrees.
