Andres Ruiz asked- I don't have John Karls book, and I am wondering if the method is the one by Gauss: http://www.fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx?i=030718&y=200606 ================= from George- Yes, that's exactly the method (which I didn't know, until now, was due to Gauss). His name crops up everywhere, doesn't it? In the notation of the equations quoted by Andres, B1 and B2 are the two ambiguous solutions for latitude, and only the navigator can decide which is the one where he is. To go with B1, there are two mathematical solutions for longitude, L11 and L12, only one of which is compatible with the two observed altitudes, and no judgment of the navigator is needed to decide which. Similarly, to go with B2, there are two longitudes L21 and L22, and a computer can choose between them.
