Hi Geoff,
I've never tried this myself. You say you've made some progress. Are you able to reproduce the tables that Maskelyne published in the British Mariner's Guide? As for Mayer's work, published in Latin, yes, I do suspect you'll want that. Herbert Prinz has read these, if I remember correctly, and I know he reads scientific Latin and has studied quite a few works on positional astronomy in Latin from this period.
