Byron on Cook: It has been a long time, since I used the 2 Minute Star Finder
for the South Hemisphere that I made many years ago is correct but crude. I got the information on Cook’s sighting of SUN & Venus needed for visiting 03 June, from the very knowledgeable crew at NAVLIST. The Sun and Venus were observed from the LATITUDE of 17.5 S and LONGITUDE 149.5W (I will be approximate because of the scale needed for my 2 minute STAR FINDER.)
The computed sun was 47 48.3 with ZN of 19.3. I used the information of, LAT &LONG and Sun GHA and Dec,from my almanac of 1973. I worked the problem on my two Minute Star Finder and read HO 48 & ZN of 020. See att1
I spent another few minute to look at GMT, LAN alt.51 at 2201 see att 2. Sunrise ZN 067 at GMT 16:22 see att3 Sunset 295 @0340.see att4 I can swing the Sun for the whole day, time bearing and alt...
Using the 2 Minute SF I planned the whole Day. I will bet that Cap. Cook would love to use 2 Minute to solve these problems? The Stars may be off a little but they also will be close enough for planning observation at night. GMT can be read off the Two Minute SF in two ways 1. A Line from the pole to the sun to the GMT on the rim, or read the time at Aries and subtract the GMT at the Month and day or in this case 3 June =4 hours 52 Minutes. I placed the sun by grease pencil by finding
Month and Day on the Base Disk (That is midnight for the date03 June= 4:52+ the occurrence 21:00,
place Aries at 25:52 -24:00 round off, 02:00. Your sky is set up. The Almanac for 03 June @21:00is
GHA =135 28.2 & DEC 22 22.6 around off and plot on the Star Disk using the plotting Disk. May sound difficult, but it’s logical.
The Sun can be set up in many other ways, if you know sun rise/set /LAN or from the Almanac.
