There was a discussion several years ago (March 2007) on this list, about the "strange sextant" shown in this banknote (look carefully at the index mirror:-) If I remember correctly, the discussion was caled "Old sextant on German money". Frank's message of 9 Mar 2007 has photos of it. It is called vizeheiotrop, and is apparently a modified Troughton and Simms Sextant. Here is a very funny web site where you can buy these 10 DM notes, and many other useful things: http://www.kleinbottle.com/gauss.htm Alex On Wed, 9 May 2012, Peter Hakel wrote: > > The context appears to be more about surveying rather than navigation. > > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:10_DM_Serie4_Rueckseite.jpg > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:10_DM_Serie4_Vorderseite.jpg > > Any comments, perhaps from our German members? > > > Peter Hakel > > > > > : http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx?i=119490 > > >
