Frank Reed, in NavList 3347, repeated familiar Warm Words about Bennett's tables. Except in regard to the azimuth table that I singled out, his assessment doesn't conflict in any way with the words I used in my posting in Navlist 3308. Then he continued- | George H. has raised some interesting technical points, which he considers | important, but they are TRIVIAL for practical navigation. Peter Fogg's | frustration with George's repetition of these trivial points is totally | understandable. Well, in rational discourse, if a contriburion is denigrated as being trivial, it would be usual to explain just why it is judged to be trivial. Frank might perhaps be right, but how can we take him seriously if he simply offers his opinion as a pronouncement? Argue your point, Frank, in such a way that those that might disagree with your assessment can argue back. But there's another facet to this business; a more serious matter, in my view. Frank accepts some sort of responsibility as the custodian of this list. In general, the discussions are civilised and gentlemanly. I like it that way, and so, I think, do others, who manage to maintain those standards. It surprises me that Frank is able to read Peter Fogg's recent postings, filled with personal abuse, and offer the fellow support, even encouragement, in referring to his "frustration". I invite him to reread those postings and comment to us all about their tone, and whether he considers that to be the way in which this list's business ought to be conducted. Peter Fogg complains that I do not respond to his postings, and indeed I would not dignify the stuff he has been spitting out with a response of any kind. However, if he can manage to control his choler and put his arguments and questions in factual terms, without the insults, then I will do my best to help him.
